Chapter 5 - The Envelope Renee Could No Longer Hide

A week later, Elaine, Frank, and Mark appeared outside my house.

Renee stood several steps behind them.

I watched through the front window before opening the door halfway.

Elaine looked immediately at the new lock.

“You changed it.”

“Yes.”

“This was Daniel’s home.”

“It was our home.”

Mark stepped forward.

“We need to discuss the funeral expenses and the accounts.”

“No, you need to discuss them with the people responsible for paying them.”

Frank adjusted his glasses but did not meet my eyes.

That was his specialty.

Avoidance disguised as peace.

Renee stepped from behind them.

She held a folded envelope against her floral blouse.

The same envelope I had noticed in the hospital waiting room.

Her confidence was no longer intact.

“What is that?” I asked.

“Something Daniel left with me.”

Elaine froze.

Mark turned toward Renee.

Clearly, they had not known she possessed it.

Renee held it tighter.

“He wanted me to have it if anything happened.”

Patricia appeared behind me in the hallway.

“Any possible testamentary or financial document must be preserved and reviewed legally.”

Renee frowned.

“It’s personal.”

“Then it can be reviewed without being destroyed or altered.”

Elaine reached for the envelope.

Renee pulled it away.

The gesture revealed the truth of their alliance.

They had protected one another only while they believed they wanted the same thing.

Now they were competitors.

I extended my hand.

Renee hesitated.

Then gave me the envelope.

Inside were three items.

An unsigned beneficiary-change form.

A handwritten letter from Daniel.

And a key to a private document box.

The beneficiary form attempted to name Renee as the recipient of one of Daniel’s insurance policies.

But it had never been signed.

Never submitted.

Never completed.

His intention did not override the actual policy.

Then I read the letter.

Daniel wrote that he planned to leave me after arranging the house and financial accounts to avoid “unnecessary disruption.” He told Renee they would live together once I had been “settled.”

As though I were a bill.

Then came the sentence that silenced the porch.

Mom understands Claire’s accounts will need to keep supporting Dad and the household until everything is finalized.

I looked up at Elaine.

Her face went white.

Mark turned toward her.

“You knew he was leaving Claire?”

Elaine said nothing.

Frank closed his eyes.

Renee had thought the letter would prove Daniel chose her.

Instead, it proved Elaine expected me to continue paying for the family even after her son abandoned me.

But the key was worse.

It opened the box containing the final part of Daniel’s plan.
