CHAPTER 9

Mia married Dr. Carter five years after that terrible wedding night.

It was a small ceremony in our backyard, just family and close friends. She wore a soft blue dress, no veil, no long train. Hope was the flower girl. Ray walked her down the aisle. Her husband, James, cried when he saw her.

His vows were simple, and perfect:

“I promise I will never let anyone hurt you. I will stand between you and every bad thing in this world for as long as I live. I love you for the woman you became, and I will spend every day proving you are safe with me.”

Mia’s vows made everyone cry:

“I thought love was about enduring things. About being quiet. About being ‘good enough.’ You taught me love is about safety. About respect. About standing up for each other. I love you. And I will never, ever let anyone make me feel small again.”

I sat in the front row, holding a photo of my husband, and cried happy tears.

A year later, Mia gave birth to twins. A girl and a boy.

They named the girl Lila Mae. The boy, they named after my husband — Thomas James.

I held them both for the first time in the hospital room, Mia resting next to me, James squeezing my hand, and I made a silent promise to those two perfect babies:

No one will ever hurt you. No one will ever make you feel like you have to give up what is yours to be loved. You will grow up knowing your worth. And if anyone ever tries to beat you, or bully you, or take what is yours — your grandma, your mom, your dad, your whole family will come for them like a storm.

You are safe.

May you like

You are loved.

You are enough.
