Chapter 3: The Sirens Outside

Chapter 3: The Sirens Outside

Daniel returned carrying another bottle of wine.

He smiled as though nothing had happened.

"We're celebrating."

"What exactly?"

"My promotion."

Melissa clapped.

Victoria raised her glass.

"To family."

Then...

The first siren echoed through the neighborhood.

Daniel frowned.

"Someone must've had an accident."

The sirens multiplied.

Closer.

Louder.

Until flashing blue and red lights reflected through the dining room windows.

A sharp knock thundered across the front door.

Nobody moved.

Another knock.

"Police Department! Open the door!"

Victoria's smile vanished.

Daniel looked at me.

"What did you do?"

I calmly stood despite the pain.

"I asked for help."

His face turned pale.

He grabbed my arm.

"What help?"

The front door burst open.

Detectives flooded inside.

"Daniel Carter!"

"Step away from your wife!"

Within seconds...

Handcuffs clicked around his wrists.

Melissa screamed.

Victoria demanded lawyers.

But Detective Monroe simply held up a tablet.

"You've all been speaking very freely tonight."

The screen replayed everything.

The assault.

The insults.

The confession.

Every horrifying second.

Daniel's knees nearly buckled.

"It... it wasn't supposed to..."

"No," Monroe interrupted.

"It wasn't supposed to be recorded."
