Chapter 2: The Inheritance of Fire

The ride was a blur. Elena sat in the back of the Escalade, surrounded by heated leather seats, her shivering subsiding as the climate control bathed her in warmth. Mr. Sterling sat across from her, a tablet in his hand.

"Mark was right about one thing," Elena said quietly, her voice gaining strength. "I came into this house with nothing. I left with nothing."

"Ms. Thorne," Sterling said, tapping his tablet. "You left with nothing, but you are arriving with everything. Within the next twelve hours, the legal team will begin an audit of this 'Mark' character’s financials. We found evidence of embezzlement at the firm he works for. Julian Thorne’s company is the parent corporation of his employer. He didn't just hurt you; he’s been stealing from the very entity you now control."

Elena looked out the window. She felt a strange sensation—not fear, but a cold, clear clarity. For months, she had been a victim. Now, the roles were being violently reversed.

They arrived at a sprawling, private penthouse suite overlooking the city. It was more space than Elena had ever seen, decorated with art that looked like it belonged in a museum. As Leo toddled out onto the plush carpet, wide-eyed and curious, Elena felt a sob catch in her throat. She wasn't safe because of luck. She was safe because the universe had finally decided to intervene.

"I need to know," Elena said, turning to Sterling. "Why now? Why did he wait seven years?"

Sterling looked pained. "Your father didn't wait. He was silenced. The board members—the ones who wanted control—kept him isolated. They told him you died in a car accident shortly after your mother passed. It was only after his death, when his private lawyer found the discrepancies in the medical records, that we realized the truth. He died trying to find you, Elena."

Elena touched the bruise on her arm—the one Mark had left only an hour ago. She felt the weight of it, the pain, and then, she felt it dissipate. The pain was in the past.

"I want him to pay," Elena said, her voice devoid of emotion. "I don't want him in jail for a day. I want him to understand exactly what he lost."

"He will," Sterling promised. "The destruction of Mark Stevens’ life has already begun."
