Chapter 2 - The Silent House

CRASH!
The heavy stone planter struck the fake driver squarely in the chest, the impact knocking him backward against the side of the sedan. The man let out a sharp grunt, his aviator sunglasses flying off his face, revealing cold, bloodshot eyes. A sleek silver firearm clattered onto the cobblestone driveway.
"Lily! Run into the house! Lock the doors!" David roared, throwing his entire body weight forward to tackle the assassin to the ground.
The intruder scrambled for the fallen weapon, but David slammed his heavy leather briefcase directly into the man's jaw. The shockwave sent the gunman stumbling against the open car door. Recognizing that his element of surprise had completely failed, the imposter cursed violently, dove into the driver's seat, slammed the door shut, and stomped on the accelerator!
Tires screeched violently, burning rubber against the driveway as the black sedan launched through the iron gates, vanishing down the wooded estate road at a hundred miles an hour.
David stood in the driveway, his chest heaving, sweat pouring down his face. He picked up his phone, his hands shaking as he dialed his chief of security, Marcus.
"Marcus! Code Red at the main estate!" David barked into the receiver. "An intruder impersonated Thomas! Lock down the entire perimeter, track my primary vehicle via GPS, and send a tactical unit to my location right now!"
"On it, Mr. Vance! Five minutes!" Marcus replied before the line went dead.
David sprinted up the brick steps into the grand foyer of the mansion, slamming the heavy oak doors and throwing the iron deadbolt into place.
Inside, the house was completely, unnervingly silent.
"Lily?!" David called out, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. "Lily, where are you?!"
A small closet door beneath the grand staircase creaked open. Lily peeked out, tears still wet on her face. David rushed over, scooping her up into his arms, holding her so tightly he could feel her rapid heartbeat against his chest.
"I'm here, baby. You're safe. Daddy's got you," David murmured, stroking her hair. He carried her into his private study, setting her down on the leather sofa and locking the study doors behind them.
David knelt in front of her, his heart hammering against his ribs. "Lily... look at me, sweetie. How did you know that man wasn't Thomas? And why did you say Mom sent him?"
Lily reached into the tiny pocket of her yellow sundress and pulled out a small, sleek black device no larger than a flash drive.
"I... I was playing hide-and-seek in Mom's closet this morning before she left," Lily whimpered, her voice trembling. "I found this under her vanity table. It was making a soft beeping sound. I pushed the little button on the side..."
David took the device. He recognized it instantly—it was a high-grade military digital voice recorder. He pressed the playback toggle.
A clear, crystal-clear audio recording filled the quiet study.
“Is everything prepared for eleven o’clock?” Victoria’s sharp, sophisticated voice spoke through the speaker.
“Yes, Mrs. Vance,” a harsh, gravelly male voice replied—the exact voice of the fake driver. “The real chauffeur is currently restrained in the boathouse. I will take his place. Once David steps into the vehicle, the remote gas system will incapacitate him. The vehicle will be directed into the quarry reservoir. It will look like a tragic single-vehicle accident.”
“Good,” Victoria’s cold voice answered without a single trace of hesitation or mercy. “Make sure the fifty-million-dollar insurance policy papers are executed before the board meeting begins. My corporate partners at the Sterling Group are waiting.”
David sat frozen on the floor, the breath completely knocked out of his lungs.
His wife of ten years... the woman he had loved, built a life with, and trusted with his daughter... had just orchestrated a cold-blooded execution to steal his company and cash in a multi-million-dollar insurance payout.
Suddenly, the heavy glass windows of the study shuddered as a black SUV pulled up onto the lawn outside.
