Chapter 2 - The Eviction
Richard’s laughter echoed through the spacious living room, harsh and condescending. He swirled the bourbon in his glass, looking at me as if I were a child throwing a tantrum.
"Amanda, please," he sneered, taking a slow sip. "You’re being hysterical. You just got off a flight. Go upstairs, take a shower, and we can discuss how to integrate Chloe into this family like reasonable adults."
Vivian chimed in, adjusting the pink lace blanket around the baby. "She’s right, Richard. Amanda is just acting out of jealousy. It’s not a good look on a mother, dear. Now, tell that boy to stop sniveling before he wakes his sister."
Brooke stood there, a smug, victorious smile plastered on her perfectly made-up face. She looked around the living room, trailing her fingers over the expensive artwork on the walls. "It really is a lovely home, Richard. We can convert Amanda’s home office into a proper nursery for Chloe. It has the best natural light."
I didn’t scream. I didn't cry. The burning rage inside me crystallized into something cold, sharp, and incredibly precise. I tightened my grip on Ethan, lifting him fully into my arms. His little hands gripped my blazer, burying his tear-stained face into my neck.
"You misunderstand," I said, my voice dropping to a deadly calm. I pulled my phone from my pocket and dialed 911.
Richard’s smirk faltered for a fraction of a second. "Who are you calling? Put the phone down, Amanda. Don't embarrass yourself."
"Hello? Yes, I need officers at 442 Crestview Drive," I said evenly, holding Richard’s gaze. "I’ve come home to find intruders in my house. One of them is becoming aggressive, and they have been abusing my four-year-old son. Yes, I’ll hold."
"Are you insane?" Richard barked, slamming his glass down on the coffee table so hard the amber liquid splashed over the rim. "This is my house! I am your husband!"
"Is it?" I asked, raising an eyebrow. I pointed up at the ceiling corner. "You forgot about the security cameras, Richard. The ones I installed last month because we had a package stolen? They record audio, too. They caught your mother forcing my son to crawl like a dog. That’s child abuse."
Vivian’s face drained of color. She looked up, spotting the small, blinking red light of the camera for the first time. "Richard..." she stammered.
"And as for the house," I continued, pacing slowly toward the door while still holding Ethan. "You might want to remember whose name is on the deed. My father bought this property in a trust under my maiden name before we even got married. You are a guest here. A guest I am officially evicting."
Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder as they wound their way up the affluent suburban hill.
Brooke’s smug expression vanished, replaced by sheer panic. She clutched Richard’s arm. "Richard, you said this was your house! You said she’d have to leave!"
"She is leaving!" Richard roared, losing his composed façade. He stepped toward me, his face red with fury. "You can’t do this to me! I built a life with you! I’m the CEO of our company!"
"You're a manager who was handed a title by my father," I corrected him icily. "And we'll discuss your employment tomorrow."
Red and blue lights flashed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, painting the marble floors in frantic colors. Heavy knocks pounded on the heavy oak door. I reached out and unlocked it, letting two armed police officers step into the foyer.
"Ma'am, you called about intruders?" the leading officer asked, taking in the scene.
"Yes," I pointed a steady finger at Richard, Vivian, and Brooke. "These three people are trespassing. They have no legal right to be here, and the older woman was caught on security footage abusing my child. I want them removed immediately."
Richard tried to talk his way out of it, using his best corporate voice, but I handed the officer my phone, displaying the property tax records and the deed perfectly matching my ID. When I showed them the footage of Vivian forcing Ethan to crawl on the floor, the officer's demeanor turned ice-cold.
"Grab your things," the officer ordered Richard and his family. "You have five minutes to vacate the premises, or you’re all leaving in handcuffs."
The sight of Brooke struggling to carry her oversized designer bags down my driveway, while Vivian hobbled behind her in the freezing night air, was a picture I would never forget. Richard turned to me one last time from the porch, his eyes filled with venom.

"You're going to regret this, Amanda. You're nothing without me."
I closed the door in his face and locked the deadbolt. Then, I carried Ethan to the kitchen, made him a cup of hot cocoa, and promised him that no one would ever treat him like that again.
