Chapter 3 - The Threat in the Ledger

The realization hit me like a physical blow. The air left my lungs, and I had to reach out, my bloody knuckles smudging the dark mahogany of Luca’s desk to keep from collapsing. This wasn't a random street crime. My little sister had accidentally walked into the middle of a territory war between the Ravellini family and the most ruthless crew in Boston.

"Oh my god," I breathed, my eyes filling with tears. "Oh my god, Luca... what do we do? We have to leave the city. I’ll take her to our aunt in Maine. We can change our names—"

"You won't make it past the state line," Luca interrupted. He reached out, his large hand wrapping firmly around my upper arm. His grip wasn't painful, but it was absolute, a heavy anchor that forced me to stop pacing.

"The Chen syndicate has lookouts at every transit hub, every highway camera, and every precinct in this district. If you step outside these walls before I clear the board, you are giving them a target."

"But she’s fourteen!" I screamed, the tears finally spilling over my cheeks. "She’s a child, Luca! She belongs in a debate club, not a body bag! You have to help her. Please. You owe me."

Luca’s grip tightened just a fraction, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that burned. "I owe you nothing, Mia. You serve me drinks at The Vanguard. You don't know me."

"I know you don't let innocent people die in your city," I argued, my voice shaking with a desperate fury.

"I’ve watched you at the club for two years, Luca. I’ve seen the way you handle the loud mouth capos who try to touch the waitresses. I’ve seen the way you give money to the old women on the corner who can't pay their rent. You are not a monster. You are the only man who can keep her alive for the next twenty-four hours."

Luca stared at me for a long, agonizing moment. The silence in the study grew so heavy I could hear the rhythmic ticking of the antique clock on the mantelpiece. He looked at my face, my split knuckles, and the raw, unadulterated bravery in my eyes.

Slowly, his hand relaxed, his fingers sliding off my arm. He turned around, walking back to the window that looked out over the dark, rain-swept courtyard.

"She stays here," Luca said quietly. "In the bunker beneath the main house. No one enters that room except me and Marco. Not even the house staff."

"And what about the police?" I asked.

"The police are already at Preston Academy," Luca hissed, pointing a finger toward a bank of silent monitors built into the wall. One of them showed a local news feed—blue and red lights flashing against the brick walls of the pharmacy alley.

"The captain of that precinct is on Jimmy Chen’s payroll. If your sister’s name appears on a witness statement tonight, she will be dead before the morning shift ends. You will stay here with her. You will not touch a phone. You will not look out a window. You belong to this house now until I tell you otherwise."

The door to the study opened, and Marco walked in, carrying a transparent evidence bag. Inside it was Sofia’s navy school skirt. The dark rust along the hem looked even more terrifying under the bright halogen lights of the study.

"Boss," Marco said, his voice grim. "We found something else in the lining of the jacket. The girl didn't just see the hit. She picked something up when she ran."

Marco reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, blood-smeared leather ledger. It was no larger than a passport, but the moment Luca saw it, his entire posture changed. He snatched it from Marco’s hand, flipping through the pages with a frantic speed that I had never seen from him before.

"What is it?" I asked, a cold dread settling into my stomach.

Luca looked up from the pages, his face completely pale, his eyes holding a look of pure, unadulterated fury.

"This is the distribution manifest for the entire North End," Luca whispered. "Names, bank accounts, drop points. My captain died protecting this. And your little sister just stole the only thing keeping Jimmy Chen from a federal execution."
