Chapter 2 - Heartbreaking Echoes in the Emergency Room

The hospital smelled of antiseptic and old coffee. The fluorescent lights overhead hummed a low, agonizing note that vibrated straight into my skull. They had taken Eli through the double doors of the trauma bay nearly two hours ago, leaving me stranded in the waiting room with nothing but my fears and the fading scent of my party perfume.

I paced the linoleum floor, my heels clicking rhythmically until the sound drove me so crazy that I ripped them off and threw them into a plastic chair. I was barefoot, my company badge still dangling uselessly over my ruined dress.

Every time the double doors swung open, my heart leaped into my throat. Finally, a doctor in green scrubs emerged, looking tired but calm.

"Are you Eli's mother?" she asked, pulling off her mask.

"Yes. Please, tell me he's okay," I begged, grabbing her forearm.

"He's stable," the doctor said, and the relief was so sudden I felt my knees buckle. She caught me, guiding me to a seat. "He has a concussion, a fractured jaw, and several deep contusions along his ribs. But the scans show no internal bleeding in the brain. We've admitted him to the pediatric ICU for observation."

"The bruise on his jaw..." I whispered, the image of Eli crumpled on the floor burning behind my eyelids. "Did someone do this to him?"

The doctor’s expression hardened slightly, adopting a cautious, professional distance. "The injuries are consistent with blunt force trauma. They don't look like the result of a typical fall. We’ve already notified the hospital’s social worker and the local police department. It's standard procedure for injuries of this nature involving a minor."

Before I could answer, a shadow fell over us. I looked up to see David, the young paramedic from earlier. He had finished his shift but hadn't changed out of his uniform. He looked exhausted, the dark circles under his eyes prominent under the harsh hospital lights.

"Can I speak with you, ma'am?" David asked quietly, glancing at the doctor, who gave a brief nod and walked away to give us privacy.

I stood up, my survival instincts on high alert. "You knew my brother. When you saw Ryan tonight, you looked like you’d seen a ghost. Who is he, David? What is he hiding?"

David took a deep breath, looking around the empty waiting room before leaning in close. "Your brother isn't just an eccentric relative, ma'am. Three years ago, I worked an emergency call at a warehouse downtown. A young man had been severely beaten—nearly killed. The primary suspect was Ryan. But before the case could even go to trial, the key witness disappeared, and the evidence file was mysteriously wiped from the police database. The case was dropped."

My blood ran cold. "Ryan? A suspect in a violent assault?"

"He’s dangerous," David said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "The medical report back then said the victim had the exact same fracture pattern on the jaw as your son has tonight. It’s like a signature."
