Chapter 5 - The War on the Shore

By the arrival of mid-January, the legal fallout from the Frostline Ridge case had spread like wildfire through the real estate and financial sectors of Colorado. Grant Whitaker’s development firm had been plunged into an involuntary Chapter 7 bankruptcy, its construction sites in Denver and Colorado Springs frozen by federal asset seizure notices.

But for Evelyn, the battle was no longer just about the money or the corporate shares. It was about the safety of the world her daughter was about to enter.

She stood inside the secure nursery at the private Reed estate in Cherry Hills—a massive stone villa surrounded by high brick walls and twenty-four-hour executive protection details. The room was warm, filled with the soft scent of cedar wood and the pristine white crib Malcolm had purchased to replace the one Grant had defiled with his presence.

"We have a situation with the Whitaker family legal defense, Miss Whitaker," reported Fernando, the lead investigator Malcolm had assigned to Evelyn's personal security team. He walked into the room, holding a encrypted communication log. "Grant’s father, old Harrison Whitaker, just arrived from his retirement estate in Palm Beach. He’s hired the most expensive criminal defense firm in Chicago, and they are attempting to file a motion for a change of venue."

Evelyn turned around from the window, her green eyes narrowing. "A change of venue? On what grounds?"

"They are claiming that Malcolm Reed’s ownership of Guardian Harbor and his dominance over the local media have made a fair trial in the state of Colorado impossible," Fernando explained. "They want the case moved to a federal district court in Wyoming, where Harrison Whitaker has deep political ties with the regional judiciary."

"My father’s wealth isn't a weapon of influence, Fernando; it’s a shield against their corruption," Evelyn said, her voice dropping into that cold, steady register she had inherited from Malcolm. "Where is Harrison Whitaker staying right now?"

"He’s currently inside the private lounge of the Brown Palace Hotel downtown," Fernando replied. "He’s called an emergency summit with the regional prosecutors to offer a global financial settlement in exchange for reducing Grant’s charges to corporate negligence."

"Get the car," Evelyn said, buttoning her navy wool coat over her pregnant belly. "My grandfather always said that if an old fox comes out of his hole, you don't wait for him to reach the chicken coop. You block the exit."
