Chapter 2

Chapter 2

By morning, the Pierce mansion felt like a battlefield after the war.

News of what happened at the gala had already begun spreading through the city’s elite circles. Whispers traveled faster than facts. Some said Christopher Pierce had lost his mind. Others said his wife had tried to murder his illegitimate daughter. The truth sat somewhere in between — darker and more complicated than anyone could have guessed.

Christopher hadn’t slept.

He sat in the armchair beside Emma’s bed, still wearing the same clothes from the night before. His daughter slept fitfully, her small hand curled around his fingers even in her dreams. Every time she twitched or made a sound, Christopher’s chest tightened.

Yvette entered quietly with a tray of coffee and toast. She placed it on the table without a word, then stood beside him.

“She asked for you three times in her sleep,” the housekeeper said softly. “She kept saying ‘Daddy, don’t let them take me.’”

Christopher swallowed hard.

“I should have taken her out of this house years ago,” he said. “I should have protected her from the beginning.”

Yvette placed a gentle hand on his shoulder.

“You saved her last night, sir. That counts for something. But now you have to decide what kind of father you’re going to be from this moment forward.”

Christopher looked up at her. Yvette had worked for the Pierce family for over thirty years. She had seen everything — the lies, the secrets, the cruelty — and had stayed silent out of loyalty. Until last night.

“Thank you,” he said quietly. “For recording them. For staying with Emma. For not looking the other way.”

Yvette’s eyes softened.

“I stayed because I loved your father. And because I always believed you had more of him in you than your mother wanted to admit.”

She hesitated, then added, “But there’s something you should know. Something I didn’t tell the police last night.”

Christopher straightened.

“What is it?”

Yvette glanced toward the door to make sure no one was listening.

“Juliette wasn’t acting alone. Not completely. There’s someone else involved. Someone who’s been helping her from the outside.”

Christopher frowned.

“Who?”

Yvette lowered her voice even further.

“His name is Victor Lang. He used to work for your father years ago. He was fired after some… unpleasant business involving missing money. Juliette has been meeting with him secretly for months. I overheard them once in the garden. He was asking her about Emma’s trust fund. About what would happen to the money if something… happened to the child.”

Christopher felt his blood run cold.

“Does my mother know about him?”

Yvette nodded slowly.

“She knows. She’s the one who introduced them.”

Christopher stood up, his jaw tight.

He had thought the worst was over. He had thought confronting his mother and throwing Juliette out would be the end of it.

He was wrong.

There was still someone out there — someone dangerous — who had his eyes on his daughter.

And if Victor Lang was involved, then this wasn’t just about inheritance anymore.

This was about something much darker.

Christopher looked down at his sleeping daughter, then back at Yvette.

“From now on, no one enters this wing without my permission. Double the security around Emma. And find out everything you can about Victor Lang. I want to know where he is, who he’s working with, and what he wants with my daughter.”

Yvette nodded.

“What about your mother?” she asked. “She’s still in the east wing. She hasn’t left her room since last night.”

Christopher’s expression hardened.

“Let her stay there for now. But make sure someone is watching her. I don’t trust her not to make another move.”

He walked over to the bed and gently brushed a strand of hair from Emma’s forehead.

“I failed her once,” he whispered. “I won’t fail her again.”

As he turned to leave the room, his phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out and looked at the screen.

It was a message from an unknown number.

You should have let her drown. Now you’ve made this personal.

Christopher stared at the message for a long moment.

Then he looked back at his daughter, still sleeping peacefully.

His jaw tightened.

Whoever sent that message had just made the biggest mistake of their life.

Because Christopher Pierce was no longer the man who stayed silent to protect the family name.

He was a father.

And he was done playing by their rules.
