Chapter 2: The Drive Home

Chapter 2: The Drive Home

I helped Emily into my truck and buckled Sophie’s car seat in the back. My granddaughter was only six months old and had slept through most of the chaos. Emily kept her eyes on the road ahead, silent tears slipping down her bruised face.

I didn’t speak until we were five miles from the hospital.

“Tell me everything,” I said.

She did.

How Ethan had grown more controlling after Sophie was born. How Margaret had moved into the guest house “to help” and had slowly taken over every decision. How Brandon had started “managing” Emily’s social media and isolating her from friends. How the “emotional episodes” were actually panic attacks triggered by constant criticism and threats.

The final straw had been that afternoon. Emily had told Ethan she wanted to take Sophie and stay with me for a few days. He had grabbed her by the throat, slammed her against the wall, and told her that if she ever tried to leave, his family would destroy her reputation so thoroughly that no one would ever believe her again.

Then they had locked her in the guest house and taken her phone.

She had escaped through a window when they went to dinner and walked two miles to the bus stop before collapsing.

I listened without interrupting.

When she finished, I reached over and squeezed her hand once.

“You’re safe now,” I said. “Both of you.”

May you like

She nodded, but I could see she didn’t fully believe it yet. That was all right.

She would.
