Chapter 3: The Firefighters

Outside, sirens screamed down the street.
Margaret’s wine glass slipped from her hand.
“Who called them?”
Jessica’s face went pale.
“I thought she didn’t have a phone.”
A firefighter’s voice boomed from outside Amelia’s window.
“Stand back!”
Glass exploded inward.
Cool air rushed into the room.
Two firefighters pulled Amelia through the window and onto the ladder truck as black smoke poured from the house.
Margaret ran forward, suddenly hysterical.
“My poor daughter! I tried to save her!”
