Chapter 2: The Threat text

The call from Margaret Sterling came just after sunrise.

Lily was still unconscious from the pain medication. I stepped out into the hallway so the sound of my voice would not reach her.

“Mr. Hale,” Margaret said, her tone smooth and almost polite. “I understand there was an unfortunate incident with the child. My sons can be… high-spirited when they’ve been drinking. I’m sure we can resolve this quietly.”

I said nothing.

She continued, a little sharper.

“My boys are protected. The sheriff, the judges, the people who matter in this county — they understand how things work. If you come looking for them, if you try to make this into something public, they will finish what they started with her. Do you understand me?”

I recorded the entire conversation.

When she finished, I said only, “I understand exactly what you’re telling me.”

Then I hung up.

I forwarded the recording to Reyes along with the hospital report and the few photographs the nurses had allowed me to take of Lily’s injuries for the medical file. Twenty minutes later my phone rang again.

“I’ve listened to it,” Reyes said. “This family has been a problem in that region for years. We’ve had quieter complaints, but nothing that ever stuck. Local law enforcement is compromised. Federal routes will take too long and tip them off.”

“I’m not asking for a legal route,” I said.

Reyes was quiet for a moment.

“What are you asking for?”

“I’m asking for the kind of help that makes people like the Sterlings realize they are not actually untouchable.”

Another silence. Then a short, humorless breath that might have been a laugh.

“I’ll make some calls,” he said. “Stay with your daughter. Do not confront them. Do not go near their property. If anything else happens, you call me before you breathe in their direction.”

I agreed and returned to Lily’s room.

She woke briefly around mid-morning. Her voice was thin and far away.

“Mom closed the curtain,” she said again, as if she still could not believe it. “She just… closed it.”

I smoothed the hair back from her forehead.

“I know, baby. I know.”

A nurse came in to check her vitals. When she left, my phone vibrated with a new message from an unknown number. Attached was a video file.

I stepped into the bathroom, locked the door, and pressed play.

The footage was grainy but clear enough. A backyard at night. Two large men — Lily’s uncles — taking turns with a tire iron while a small figure tried to curl into a ball on the ground. And there, framed in a brightly lit window, stood my ex-wife. She watched for a long time. Then, slowly and deliberately, she reached up and pulled the curtain closed.

I watched the video twice.

Then I sent it to Reyes with a single line:

This is what they did.

They were the beginning of something the Sterling family had never prepared f
