Chapter 3: The Restrictive Trust
The older attorney, Mr. Langford, explained everything on the front steps.
Years ago, when Claire’s grandmother Eleanor bought the house as a wedding gift for her and Daniel, she had placed it into a revocable living trust with very specific conditions.
The house could not be sold without Claire’s written consent.
If Daniel tried to sell it behind her back, the sale would be considered invalid.
Even more importantly, Eleanor had added a clause: if Daniel ever filed for divorce or attempted to remove Claire from the property, full ownership would automatically transfer to Claire alone.
Daniel looked like he was going to be sick.
“But… I already signed the papers,” he said weakly. “The buyers are on their way.”
Mr. Langford gave him a cold smile.
“Then those buyers are about to be very disappointed. Because this house was never yours to sell.”
Patricia’s voice rose in panic.
“This is ridiculous! Daniel is her husband! He has rights!”
Mr. Langford turned to her.
“Not according to the trust your mother-in-law created. And certainly not after what you’ve attempted to do today.”
He turned back to Claire.
“Mrs. Whitmore, would you like us to inform the incoming buyers that the property is no longer available?”
Claire looked at Daniel and Patricia.
For the first time in years, she felt completely in control.
