Chapter 4: The Enemy Who Was Never Seen

Marcus did not sleep that night.

Not for even a minute.

He sat inside his father’s old study, surrounded by memories that suddenly felt like warnings.

The room had remained untouched for years.

Daniel Hale’s leather chair still sat behind the large wooden desk.

The old bookshelf still carried hundreds of books.

The framed family photographs still covered the walls.

For years, Marcus had seen this room as a symbol of success.

A place where his father had built a legacy.

Now?

It felt like a battlefield.

Every object had a hidden meaning.

Every memory had a missing piece.

He stared at the photograph on his desk.

His father.

His mother.

A younger version of himself standing between them.

A normal family.

A happy family.

Before money.

Before power.

Before betrayal.

Marcus picked up the photograph.

“Who were you protecting us from?”

The question disappeared into the silent room.

His father had known.

Years ago.

He had known someone close to them could become dangerous.

And he had prepared for that moment.

Marcus looked at the letter again.

The words repeated in his mind.

The person who helps you uncover the truth may be the same person who created the lie.

Richard had shown up.

Richard had known about the envelope.

Richard had wanted Marcus to open it.

But then he took the envelope and disappeared.

Why?

Unless…

Marcus stopped.

A terrifying possibility entered his mind.

What if Richard wasn’t trying to hide the evidence?

What if he was trying to protect himself from whoever was truly in control?

The thought made everything more complicated.

Because maybe Richard was guilty.

But maybe he wasn’t the mastermind.

At 6:15 the next morning, Marcus arrived at the hospital.

Detective Laura Bennett was already waiting.

She looked exhausted.

“You didn’t sleep.”

Marcus ignored the comment.

“Someone took a picture of my mother inside the hospital.”

Her expression changed.

“Show me.”

He handed her his phone.

She studied the image carefully.

“When was this sent?”

“Last night.”

“From what number?”

“Blocked.”

Detective Bennett frowned.

“That means someone either has access to professional equipment…”

She looked up.

“Or someone has connections.”

Marcus knew exactly what she meant.

Money.

Power.

Influence.

People like that didn’t need to break into places.

They opened doors.

They convinced people.

They erased problems.

“How is my mother?”

Detective Bennett’s expression softened.

“Stable.”

Marcus finally breathed.

“But there’s something you need to know.”

“What?”

“She asked to speak with you.”

Marcus immediately walked toward the room.

Evelyn was awake.

She looked better than the night before.

But Marcus noticed something.

Fear.

His mother had spent her whole life being strong.

She had faced poverty.

Loss.

Loneliness.

But now?

She looked afraid.

“Mom.”

She reached for him.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

Marcus sat beside her.

“I’m not leaving.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You don’t understand.”

“Yes, I do.”

“No.”

Her voice became urgent.

“You don’t know what these people are capable of.”

Marcus lowered his voice.

“Tell me.”

Evelyn looked toward the door.

Then whispered:

“Your father knew.”

Marcus froze.

“Knew what?”

“That someone would come after us.”

“When?”

“Before he died.”

Marcus leaned closer.

“What did he tell you?”

She closed her eyes.

“I thought it was paranoia.”

A painful pause.

“He told me that if anything happened to him, I should protect you.”

Marcus swallowed.

“From who?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“I never knew.”

“That’s not possible.”

“It is.”

Her hands trembled.

“Your father didn’t tell me because he thought I was safer not knowing.”

Marcus felt a heavy feeling in his chest.

“But he left something.”

Evelyn nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

“What?”

“I don’t know.”

Marcus looked frustrated.

“Mom…”

“I’m telling you the truth.”

She took a deep breath.

“The night before he died, your father gave me instructions.”

“What instructions?”

“He told me that if someone ever tried to take control of the family assets…”

She looked directly at him.

“I had to find the person he trusted least.”

Marcus frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“It will.”

“Who?”

Evelyn hesitated.

Then said:

“Your uncle.”

Marcus went completely still.

“My uncle?”

“Thomas.”

Marcus felt the room spinning.

Thomas Hale.

His father’s younger brother.

A man who had disappeared from the family years ago.

Everyone thought he moved overseas.

Everyone thought he wanted nothing to do with the Hale family.

But now…

Marcus remembered something.

When he was a child, his father and Thomas had a massive argument.

After that day, Thomas vanished.

His father never spoke about him again.

“Why would my father distrust his own brother?”

Evelyn looked away.

“Because Thomas knew a secret.”

“What secret?”

Before Evelyn could answer…

The heart monitor beside her suddenly changed.

The sound became faster.

A nurse rushed in.

“Step back!”

Marcus moved away.

The nurse checked the machine.

Then checked Evelyn.

“What happened?”

The nurse looked confused.

“Her medication.”

Marcus immediately turned.

“What about it?”

“She was given a dose that doesn’t match her chart.”

His stomach dropped.

“What?”

The nurse looked at the bottle.

“This medication was changed.”

Marcus stared.

Someone had altered his mother’s medication.

Inside the hospital.

A place supposed to be safe.

Detective Bennett immediately entered the room.

“What happened?”

Marcus looked at her.

“They reached her.”

The detective’s face hardened.

She immediately called security.

But Marcus already understood.

This wasn’t a warning anymore.

This was an attack.

Someone wanted him scared.

Someone wanted him to stop.

And someone was willing to hurt an innocent old woman to make that happen.

Two hours later, hospital security reviewed the cameras.

They found the person who entered Evelyn’s room.

Marcus stood beside Detective Bennett as the footage played.

A nurse walked in.

Checked the medication.

Left.

Then five minutes later…

Another person entered.

Marcus leaned forward.

The image was blurry.

But the person’s face became visible.

His heart stopped.

Because it wasn’t a stranger.

It wasn’t Richard.

It wasn’t Celeste.

It was someone else.

Someone who had visited their home many times.

Someone his mother trusted.

Someone Marcus never considered a threat.

Detective Bennett looked at him.

“You know that person?”

Marcus couldn’t answer.

Because the person on the screen was…

Rosa Martinez.

His mother’s caregiver.

The woman who had saved Evelyn.

The woman who had taken the hit from the feather duster.

The woman he believed was a hero.

Marcus stared at the screen.

“No…”

Detective Bennett watched him carefully.

“Marcus.”

He shook his head.

“That doesn’t make sense.”

But the footage showed Rosa entering.

Changing the medication.

Then leaving.

A perfect betrayal.

Or a perfect setup.

Because something felt wrong.

Very wrong.

Then Marcus noticed something.

The timestamp.

The footage had been altered.

Someone had edited the hospital cameras.

Someone wanted him to see Rosa.

Someone wanted him to stop trusting the only person who had protected his mother.

Marcus looked at Detective Bennett.

“This isn’t Rosa.”

The detective frowned.

“How do you know?”

“Because the person who did this…”

He pointed at the screen.

“Wanted me to believe exactly that.”

The detective looked at him.

“So what are you saying?”

Marcus stared at the frozen image.

“I’m saying we’re not chasing the person who did this.”

A pause.

“We’re chasing the person who wants us to chase the wrong person.”

At that moment, Marcus’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

He answered.

No one spoke.

Then a voice finally came through.

A voice he had never heard before.

An older man.

Calm.

Confident.

“You’re getting closer, Marcus.”

His blood ran cold.

“Who are you?”

The man laughed softly.

“The person your father spent his entire life trying to stop.”

Marcus gripped the phone.

“What do you want?”

The answer came immediately.

“What I should have had twenty-five years ago.”

The call ended.

Marcus looked at Detective Bennett.

“What did he say?”

Marcus slowly lowered the phone.

“He knew my father.”

A pause.

“And he wants what my father hid.”

The detective looked serious.

“Then we need to find it first.”

Marcus looked toward the hospital room where his mother was lying.

Because now he understood.

The fight was no longer about money.

It was about a secret.

A secret powerful enough to destroy friendships.

Break marriages.

And turn family members into enemies.

But before Marcus could uncover the truth
He would have to answer one question.

Who was the man his father feared more than anyone else?
