Chapter 3: The Fall Ryan Called an Accident

Clara remembered the parking garage in fragments.

The smell of damp concrete. The flicker of overhead lights. Her own shoes slipping slightly as she hurried toward the elevator. Ryan’s voice behind her, demanding that she stop.

She did not remember every word. Maybe her mind protected her from some of them.

But she remembered turning around.

She remembered Ryan holding her purse, which she had dropped near the entrance. He lifted it like proof that she could not go anywhere without what belonged to her.

“You’re making a scene,” he said.

“There’s no one here,” Clara replied, though she wished there were.

“There are cameras.”

At that, something in his expression changed. He looked up, scanning the ceiling. The camera nearest them had a small red light.

Clara noticed it too.

For one second, she felt hope.

Then Ryan stepped closer, blocking her from the camera’s best angle. He lowered his voice. He told her she would ruin him. He told her no one would believe a woman who had lived comfortably on his money. He told her that if she left, she would leave with nothing.

Clara tried to move past him.

What happened next was not the dramatic scene Ryan later described. It was not Clara “panicking.” It was not her “tripping because she was emotional.” It was not an accident caused by rainwater or weak shoes.

Ryan reached for her.

Clara twisted away.

Her body struck the side of a parked service cart, then the floor came up too fast. Pain flashed through her, bright and terrifying, but the fear was worse than the pain because Ryan did not immediately help her.

He stood over her, breathing hard.

For a moment, Clara thought he might leave.

Then an elevator opened.

A hospital maintenance worker stepped out with a box of supplies. Ryan’s face transformed. He dropped to his knees beside Clara.

“My wife fell!” he shouted. “Help! Please, somebody help!”

The worker called emergency services inside the building. Nurses came. A doctor arrived. Ryan held Clara’s hand in front of them and told everyone she had been dizzy, upset, careless.

Clara tried to speak, but her breath kept breaking.

Ryan leaned close and whispered so only she could hear.

“Say one word, and you’ll regret it.”

So when the doctor asked what happened, Clara stared at the ceiling and said nothing.

But the camera had seen more than Ryan knew.

And someone else had heard him whisper.
