Chapter 2: The Paper Trail

Chapter 2: The Paper Trail

By 2:00 AM, the house was empty, sealed off as a crime scene. I stood in the hospital room, watching the steady rise and fall of Ethan’s chest. The doctors had brought his fever down to 99 degrees. He was safe. Claire lay in the bed beside his crib, an IV in her arm and a fresh bandage over her swollen eye.
"They told me you were dead, Daniel," she whispered, her voice cracking. "Margaret showed me a forged letter saying your unit was hit. She said if I didn't sign the house over to her, she’d let Ethan starve because I couldn't afford to feed him."
I knelt by her bed, taking her bruised hand in mine. "I'm so sorry, Claire. I should have seen through their lies sooner."
"How did you find out?"
"The nursery camera," I explained softly. "When they cut the Wi-Fi to isolate you, they didn't realize the camera I installed had a military-grade cellular backup battery. It kept recording locally. Every time they mocked you, every time Margaret put her hands on you, the data was uploaded to a secure cloud server managed by my base."
The door opened, and my attorney, Marcus Vance—my grandfather's brother and the executor of the family trust—walked in. He looked disgusted.
"Daniel, I’ve reviewed the financial logs from the last six months," Marcus said, placing a heavy file on the bedside table. "Your mother and sister didn't just abuse Claire. They completely drained the auxiliary bank account you set up for the baby's medical expenses. Over eighty thousand dollars spent on designer clothes, spa days, and trips to Aspen."
Claire gasped, tears filling her eyes. "I asked for ten dollars to buy Ethan's medicine, and Vanessa threw a bottle of water at me. She said I was wasting their money."
A dark, icy resolve settled in my chest. "They thought they were playing a game with a defenseless woman. They forgot that the man protecting her is trained to dismantle threats."
Marcus nodded grimly. "The temporary occupancy agreement for the house has a strict morality and legality clause. Since they have been charged with felonies on the property, their right to stay is legally void. By sunrise, I will have the eviction orders finalized. They won't even be allowed back in to get their clothes."
Chapter 3: The Cold Cell
In the county jail's holding cell, the reality of their situation was finally sinking in for Margaret and Vanessa. The luxury silk robe had been replaced by a rough, orange jumpsuit.
When Marcus and I walked into the visitation room later that morning, Margaret slammed her hands against the glass divider. "Daniel! You order those guards to let us out right now! Vanessa is having a panic attack! This place is filthy!"
"You'll get used to it," I said, sitting down calmly. "You're going to be here for a very long time."
"We are family!" Vanessa screamed, her voice hoarse. "You're ruining our lives over that pathetic girl! She’s nothing! A nobody from the countryside!"
"That 'nobody' is my wife, and the mother of my son," I said, my voice cutting through her hysterics like a knife. "And because of what you did to her, I am enforcing the full weight of the law."
Marcus pushed a legal document against the glass. "Margaret, this is the official revocation of your stipend from the Vance Family Trust. As of 8:00 AM today, you are completely disinherited. The trust will no longer pay for your lawyers, your debts, or your lifestyle."
Margaret’s face turned white. "You can't do that! My father set that trust up for me!"
"No," Marcus corrected sternly. "Your father set it up for his descendants who honor the family name. You are a criminal, Margaret. The trust board voted unanimously this morning to strip you of every penny."
"Daniel, please," Margaret begged, her tone suddenly changing to a desperate, fake sweetness. "I made a mistake. I was stressed. The baby cried all the time... I just wanted to help Claire learn how to be a strong mother."

"You bruised her arms. You starved my son," I said, standing up and looking down at her with total disgust. "When I was overseas, I fought enemies who had more honor than you. Do not look for me again. From this moment on, you don't have a son."
