The Bride on the Marble Steps

Chapter 01 - The Bride on the Marble Steps
The first dance had not even begun when Olivia Hart collapsed.
One moment, she was standing beneath the chandeliers of the Grand Bellamy Hotel, laughing as her new husband, Ethan Cole, lifted a glass for the wedding toast. The next, her champagne-colored gown swept across the marble steps and her body went still.
For half a second, the ballroom froze.
Then Olivia’s father, Richard Hart, pushed through the guests and dropped beside her. Ethan stood only a few feet away, stunned, his black tuxedo making him look like a shadow beneath the white lights.
“Call an ambulance!” Richard shouted.
Olivia’s lips moved, but no sound came out. A hotel physician rushed forward, checked her breathing, and asked whether she had any serious allergies.
Ethan’s face changed. “Tree nuts,” he said. “She carries an emergency injector in her bridal bag.”
The bag was gone.
Richard looked at Ethan as if he had just confessed to something. “You knew?”
“I planned the entire menu with the chef,” Ethan replied. “Everything was supposed to be nut-free.”
Only an hour earlier, Olivia had shown Ethan the allergy card attached to every kitchen order. She had teased him for checking the details three times. Now the card was nowhere on the dessert tray.
A bridesmaid found Olivia’s injector inside a coat closet, hidden beneath a pile of linens. The physician used it immediately. Within minutes, Olivia’s breathing began to steady, but the ballroom had already turned into a storm of fear and suspicion.
On a nearby table sat the dessert Olivia had tasted seconds before she fell—a small white pastry decorated with gold leaf. Ethan picked up the printed menu card. The words “almond cream” had been added in handwriting beside the dessert description.
Richard rose slowly.
Three weeks earlier, he had warned Olivia that the Cole family cared more about reputation than people. Ethan’s mother, Evelyn Cole, had opposed the marriage from the beginning. Yet Richard had also discovered something troubling about Ethan: a life insurance policy opened in Olivia’s name only days before the wedding.
Now his daughter lay on the floor, and the one person who knew exactly what could harm her was the man she had just married.
Richard grabbed Ethan by the lapels.
“What did you do to my daughter?”
Gasps spread across the room. Ethan did not fight back. He looked past Richard toward Olivia, who was being lifted onto a stretcher.
“I love her,” he said
Chaper2: The Missing Bridal Bag

Chapter 02 - The Missing Bridal Bag
Olivia was taken to St. Anne’s Hospital, where doctors confirmed that she had suffered a severe allergic reaction. She was stable, but they wanted to observe her overnight.
Ethan tried to follow the ambulance, but Richard blocked him at the hotel entrance.
“You are not going near her until I know the truth,” he said.
Police officers began interviewing the caterers and collecting the dessert tray. The executive chef insisted that no nuts had been used in any wedding dish. His staff had prepared a plain vanilla pastry for Olivia and stored it separately in a sealed box marked with her name.
Someone had replaced it.
Ethan’s mother, Evelyn, stood with the remaining guests, calm in a silver evening gown. She told Richard that Ethan had been under enormous pressure and that perhaps the marriage had been a mistake from the start.
Ethan stared at her. “Why are you talking about the marriage while Olivia is in the hospital?”
Evelyn lowered her voice. “Because this family cannot survive another scandal.”
The missing bridal bag was discovered in a locked service room. Inside were Olivia’s phone, her medication, and a torn envelope addressed to Richard. The envelope contained copies of the life insurance policy.
Ethan admitted he had arranged the policy, but not in secret. It was part of a mutual financial plan prepared by their attorney. Olivia had signed an identical policy for him. Someone had removed only the pages that proved it was a shared decision.
Richard still did not trust him.
Then Olivia’s phone lit up with an unsent voice message recorded shortly before the reception. In it, Olivia sounded frightened.
“Dad, I found out who has been sending the anonymous letters. I’m going to confront them after the toast. Please don’t blame Ethan. He doesn’t know yet.”
The message ended with a door opening and a woman’s voice saying, “You should have left this family alone.”
Everyone in the room recognized the voice.
Evelyn’s expression did not change, but Ethan stepped toward her.
“Mom?”
She claimed the recording was misleading. She said she had only warned Olivia not to make accusations in public. Richard demanded to know why Olivia’s emergency medication had been hidden.
Evelyn looked at the officers, then at her son.

But someone close to her had.
