Part 2 : The ballroom exploded with whispers.

Victoria stared at the child as if she had seen a ghost.

Her husband, Richard Hayes, walked slowly toward her.

“Who is she, Victoria?” he asked.

Victoria couldn’t speak.

The little girl looked frightened.

The woman beside her stepped forward.

“My name is Sarah.”

Richard frowned.

Sarah looked directly at Victoria.

“You remember me.”

Victoria’s knees nearly gave out.

Emma watched quietly.

Everything was unfolding exactly as she had planned.

Sarah pulled out several documents.

“For seven years, Victoria paid me to stay silent.”

The crowd gasped.

Richard looked confused.

“Silent about what?”

Tears filled Sarah’s eyes.

She gently placed a hand on the little girl’s shoulder.

“About your daughter.”

The room fell completely silent.

Richard stared at the child.

Then at Victoria.

Then back at the child.

The resemblance was undeniable.

Victoria burst into tears.

“It was a mistake,” she whispered.

Richard stepped backward in disbelief.

“A mistake?”

Emma finally spoke.

“No, Victoria.”

Everyone looked at her.

Emma held up another envelope.

“There is one more thing.”

Victoria’s eyes widened.

“No…”

Emma revealed a second photograph.

This time Richard saw it too.

It showed Victoria meeting secretly with Emma’s former business partner.

The same partner who had stolen millions from Emma years earlier.

Richard’s face darkened.

“You helped destroy her life?”

Victoria said nothing.

Because she couldn’t deny it.

The ballroom was silent.

Everything she had built was collapsing.

Emma walked past her.

For years she had waited for justice.

Tonight, she finally got it.

As Victoria stood alone under the sparkling chandeliers, Emma smiled and headed toward the exit.

For the first time in years…

She felt free.

CHAPTER 3: THE MASK OF GLASS

The grand ballroom of the Ashby Estate gleamed under the cascade of crystal chandeliers, a monument to old money, fragile alliances, and whispered secrets. Champagne flutes clinked in rhythmic unison, mingling with the low murmur of high-society chatter, classical string quartets, and the rustle of designer silk. For the outside world, this annual charity gala was a celebration of philanthropy and grace. But for Victoria Vance, seated alone near the edge of the polished mahogany dance floor, it was an arena of predators and prey.

Victoria sat upright in her sleek, custom-built metallic-gray wheelchair, her dark velvet one-shoulder evening gown draped elegantly over her frame. Her dark hair was drawn back into a severe, immaculate chignon, framing a face that was strikingly pale, punctuated by eyes that held a deep, bruised sorrow. To the hundreds of elites mingling around her, she was a symbol of tragic misfortune—a once-brilliant rising star in the corporate and philanthropic world whose life had been permanently upended by a devastating accident two years prior.

They looked at her with a toxic blend of pity and quiet condescension. Some whispered behind gloved hands, marveling at her audacity to show her face in public, let alone at the most exclusive event of the year. They assumed she came for scraps of sympathy, desperate to remain tethered to a world that had long since moved on without her.

A shadow fell over her, cutting off the dim amber glow of the wall sconces.

Victoria lifted her gaze. Standing before her was Jessica Sterling, radiant, untouchable, and dripping in emerald diamonds. Jessica’s blonde hair fell in soft, flawless waves over a daring black halter gown. In her right hand, she swirled a glass of deep, crimson Merlot, her lips curled into a predatory, knowing smirk.

"Still playing the victim, Victoria?" Jessica’s voice was a low, melodic purr, dripping with venom meant only for Victoria’s ears. "It’s pathetic. Honestly, seeing you rolled out here like an antique furniture piece no one knows what to do with... it’s embarrassing for all of us."

Victoria didn’t flinch. Her breathing remained steady, though a muscle feathered nervously along her jawline. She looked up into Jessica’s triumphant, cruel eyes, refusing to shrink away. "I’m here because I belong here, Jessica," Victoria replied, her voice cool, steady, and dangerously low. "More than you could ever possibly understand."

Jessica’s smile tightened, the mask slipping for a fraction of a second. The audacity of Victoria—crippled, abandoned, and isolated—to speak to her with such unyielding composure struck a raw nerve. Jessica leaned down closer, invading Victoria’s personal space, the scent of expensive French perfume and fermented grapes heavy in the air.

"No, you’re here because you crave attention," Jessica hissed, her voice rising just enough to draw the subtle sideways glances of nearby guests. "You love the pity. You love playing the broken bird so everyone forgets what a fraud you—"

Before Jessica could finish her sentence, a sudden surge of blind rage twisted her features. With a sharp, vindictive snap of her wrist, Jessica tilted her hand forward.

Splash.

The deep red Merlot poured in a violent wave directly over Victoria’s chest, soaking through the dark velvet of her gown, dripping down her lap, and staining the pristine white fabric of the wheelchair cushions. Gasps erupted from the immediate circle of onlookers. Conversations died instantly. Within seconds, a heavy, suffocating silence blanketed the entire ballroom as dozens of heads turned toward the commotion.

Jessica stood there panting, her hand still holding the empty wine glass, wearing the expression of a woman who had finally stamped out an insect that had been annoying her for too long.

Yet, in that exact moment of public humiliation, something shifted.

Victoria did not cry out. She did not shrink back or bring trembling hands to cover the wine-soaked fabric staining her dress. Instead, she closed her eyes for a single, long heartbeat. When she opened them, the sorrow was entirely gone, replaced by a glacial, terrifying clarity.

Slowly, deliberately, Victoria raised her hands. She gripped the armrests of her wheelchair.

The murmurs in the crowd swelled, turning into a confused roar. Cameras flashed from multiple smartphones in the crowd as curious guests whipped out their devices to capture what they thought was the climax of a public breakdown.

"Look at her, she’s cracking," someone whispered nearby.

Victoria ignored them. With a sudden, immense surge of strength that defied every medical record, every sympathy card, and every lie told about her over the past twenty-four months, Victoria planted her feet firmly on the polished hardwood floor.

Muscles that had allegedly atrophied flexed. Her knees locked. With a steady, breathtaking grace, Victoria Vance pushed herself up and stood entirely on her own two feet.

The silence in the grand ballroom became absolute.

Every glass stopped mid-air. Every smartphone lowered. Faces froze in various stages of shock, jaws dropping open as the impossible unfolded before their eyes. The woman who had been wheeled into the room like a helpless invalid was standing tall, towering over the empty metallic chair behind her, her silhouette sharp against the glittering chandeliers.

Jessica staggered backward, her face draining of all color, her lips parting in a silent, horrified scream. Her knees buckled slightly as the absolute realization of what this meant crashed down upon her.

Victoria smoothed down the front of her wine-stained gown with one hand, her movements composed, terrifyingly calm. With her other hand, she reached into the hidden inner pocket of her dress and pulled out a heavy, cream-colored, gold-embossed envelope.

She walked forward—not stumbling, not limping, but pacing with the measured, lethal elegance of an executioner—until she stood inches away from a paralyzed, trembling Jessica.

"Are you all sure you want everyone filming this?" Victoria’s voice echoed clearly through the vaulted ceiling, striking every ear in the room. "Because what happens next cannot be unseen."

Victoria slid her fingers into the envelope and drew out a single, high-gloss photograph, holding it up for Jessica—and the surrounding crowd—to see.

In the photograph, captured in crisp, high-definition lighting, was Jessica Sterling locked in an intimate, undeniable embrace inside a luxurious penthouse suite. Standing right beside her, wearing a tailored tuxedo with his tie loosened, was Victoria’s legally wedded husband—Richard.

Jessica’s eyes bulged out of her head. She stared at the photograph, her breath catching in her throat, a choked, terrified sound escaping her lips as the ground seemed to vanish beneath her feet.

May you like

Victoria tilted her head, a cold, humorless smile touching her lips as she leaned in close to Jessica’s ear for one final, devastating question.

"One last question, Jessica..." Victoria whispered, loud enough for the front row of cameras to record every syllable. "...Does your husband know who was really in your penthouse last Friday night?"
